Report back from the Montreal Rally to mark International Workers Day – highlighting the fight against precarious work.
Community Groups held a rally to mark International Workers Day, outside Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail (CNESST). A coalition of community groups against precarious work will hold a rally outside of the CNESST on May 1st to mark International Workers Day. The community groups will highlight the need for better protection for the thousands of immigrant and migrant workers in Quebec under the province’s labour standards. Their demands include CSST (workers’ comp) for domestic workers, protection under the labour standards for non-status workers, job stability (direct hiring after 3 months) for temporary agency workers and a $15 minimum wage in Quebec.

Event details: Non-Regular Book on Precarious Academic Labour May 5-May 19 ECIAD Library
“Non-Regular” is a collection of stories, analysis, personal essays, interviews and artwork about the state of employment precarity at Emily Carr. Designed, co-authored and edited by a student, it consists of collaborations and contributions by 22 instructors and artists speaking about the conditions of their work. The book aims to foster understanding and solidarity between students and instructors and among faculty members. It is a window into labour practices at Emily Carr University as well as into larger trends in post-secondary education.
Cross-stitch created by a former ECU sessional instructor for the book. They made it in response to the fact that the ECU Collective Agreement uses this phrase three times in reference to non-regular instructors.
A major consideration is how current employment practices—insofar as they affect academic integrity and freedom—are contributing to an erosion of the quality and value of education, and how Emily Carr has an opportunity to be a leader as a socially responsible institution.
